In 1992 a needs analysis was undertaken by community members, the Methodist Mission, St John's and Raumanga Church.
A need for a semi-professional organisation with emphasis on education, prevention, supports and advocacy was identified.
The Community House was established in 1993 in response to these needs.
For the first 7 year the House was governed by a Steering Committee with representatives from St John's Cooperating Parish, Methodist Mission and the Community.
One Double Five Whare Roopu Community House Trust was incorporated on 21 September 1999.
Project teams also have lines of accountability, but each person has individual supervision with a coordinator once a month to review their personal and professional goals, and training needs to meet these goals.
Their is an outreach worker's team, administration and house management group, counselling and advocacy group, youth project, Cyber Whare, Health Centre, Home maintenance and Firewood Project, Legal aid and Tutoring projects.
The central function of the Community House is to host people, make them feel welcome, listen to their concerns and to facilitate them reaching their objectives.
There are a group of volunteers who come into the house to greet people, get them a cuppa, to cook up food when we have it, to sing, and to share time with people. Everything else grows from this.
The Whare Offers counselling and advocacy for people who come in or ring up. A group of six has training in Strength Based Practice. Seeking out strengths, alternatives, plans and vision is our focus in this area.
The Community House supports the collective that concerns poor and oppressed people voice. In this role we raise issues with Central and Local Government and in the media.
We make submissions on these issues and facilitate collective action.

One Double Five Community House aims to recognise and enhance the skills people in the Whangarei area have and to assist them to meet their individual and collective needs.
Our prime focus is empowering those in our community with less access to resources.
The Community House is governed by a Trust comprised of people from the Otangarei / Kensington Community, representatives from the Auckland Methodist Mission and St John's Church. This body meets once a month.
