Emergency Accomodation

Whangarei Emergency Housing Trust

The Whangarei Emergency Housing Trust is a collaborative venture of local churches supporting local homeless people.

The Catholic Parish, Salvation Army, Baptist Parish, Equip Church and Methodist Presbytarian Union are founding members of the group. The Trust also invites the participation of other fellowships.

Aiming to address issues of homelessness and emergency housing need in Whangarei, Chris Mcloughlin has led the group in getting places for people in crisis to stay. She has been supported by Jinx. Audrey at Mair Street and Crete at Aotea House are House Managers for the project.

Over the cold winter months it became very difficult to find any places for people to sleep over night in Whangarei. The situation has been made worse by the closing of caravan parks.

This project has been supported by

• Housing New Zealand Corporation
• Work and Income Northland
• Northland District Health Board
• Whangarei District Council
• One Double Five Community House
• Citizens Advice Bureau
• Whangarei Council of Social Service
• Safer Whangarei Community Council

Emergency housing in Whangarei
Housing New Zealand has subcontracted a house at 25 Mair Street, Whangarei for emergency housing. A local trust has purchased Aotea House for local homeless families.

Both places have been blessed for our use and we hope this will be a warm and inviting place to families in need.

One Double Five fostered the development of the Whangarei Emergency Housing Trust and now acts as their community development consultant.
